I'm a big fan of this dictionary. The Canon Wordtank C50 is a powerful yet compact (pocket-sized) Japanese-English dictionary. I bought one for myself, even though I already had the G55 as well, because its size makes it easy to take it wherever I go. The C50 is truly small enough to take anywhere in a jacket pocket or purse, without being so small that the keyboard becomes awkward to operate (I have large hands.) It fits nicely in the pockets of my cargo pants, and it even includes a lanyard you can wrap around your hand so you don't drop it when on the go.

Functionality is similar to the G50. Menus can be toggled from Japanese to English, and they've added a thumb-size joystick-type control on the left-side, in addition to the cursor control on the right-side, which allows menu manipulation with either hand (pushing the thumb knob functions like the enter button).

The C50 unfortunately lacks the animated kanji stroke diagrams of the G50 and G55, but includes travel phrase dictionaries in English, Italian, French, Korean, Spanish, and German. You can search look up individual words and search the example phrases for words and all the travel dictionaries display the result in BOTH the foreign language (Italian, German, etc.) AND English. The nice thing about owning this is that as your Japanese improves, you'll be able to use the travel dictionaries for other languages. While limited, they do include lots of useful phrases. Searching for KAU (buy) in the Italian travel dictionary provides a list of 18 phrases with BUY, such as "kippu wa doko de kaemasuka" and the English and Italian, respectively: "Where can I buy a ticket?" and "Dove potrei comprare il biglietto?" The foreign langauge phrases are shown with katakana as a pronunciation guide.

Please note:
knowing Hiragana is prerequisite to use any of the electronic dictionaries we are selling. If you don't already know hiragana, please consider purchasing our set of "Kana Flashcards" along with this product. There are about 46 kana characters, so if you learn 5 or 10 per day, you can learn hiragana in about a week.

Keep in mind:
When you look up a word from English to Japanese, the results come back written in Japanese (kanji, hiragana and katakana). Using the jump function you can quickly find what you are looking for, but it may pose an initial challenge (especially to beginners.)
