During the Eighties, Pendergrass was one of the most successful soul singers around. He started his career as the drummer with Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes in 1970, eventually sharing lead singing with Melvin. His solo career commenced in 1976, recording hits like "I Don't Love You Anymore," and "Close The Door," which led to four multi-platinum albums. In 1982, Pendergrass was partially paralyzed in a near-fatal car crash.
